History fact for the day [Aug. 23rd, 2016|07:28 am]
Xiphias Gladius
Thing I learned: George II of England, who reigned in the middle of the eighteenth century, 1727 to 1760, had several mistresses, but wasn't really THAT into any of them. However, his wife wouldn't let him get rid of them, because she felt, and he agreed, that it would be inappropriate for a man in his position to NOT have mistresses.

Not only that, but his wife (Queen Caroline) was one of the great Natural Philosophers of the day. She was also considered extremely attractive. She was the kind of woman who any smart husband would seek out the approval of for a potential mistress.

The podcast from which I got this, Rex Factor, said that Caroline is sometimes considered to be the most intelligent Queen Consort (rather than ruling Queen) Britain ever had.

I'd hazard that the qualifier isn't even necessary. From what I know about Caroline I'd guess she was the mental match of both Elizabeths and Victoria. She certainly was smarter than any of the Marys.

(Yeah, I'm kind of a fan of Caroline.)

I'd put her above the Marys, certainly. Mary II is frankly a contender for dumbest monarch -- not by nature, but she deliberately trained herself to be stupid. The UK was fortunate that she insisted an having William as a co-monarch. When forced to do things on her own, she was basically competent, and had she been brought up to be educated and competent, I'm sure she would have been fine. But, as it is, she's competing with Catherine Howard for dumbest queen.

Caroline was at least on a level with Victoria. I'm not sure about the Elizabeths, but I'm willing to entertain the notion.
