Look, Barbara loyalists -- I get why you're mad. But look at it from the characters' perspe [Sep. 6th, 2016|01:25 pm]

Lis and I just watched STRANGER THINGS, and I've got something to say about one of the controversies about it...

Spoilers for STRANGER THINGS.
Okay, yeah. There was no hue-and-cry for Barbara, when she vanished just a day or two after Will did. And she DIED in the Upside-Down, and wasn't rescued.

I get that.

But the bad guys faked it so that it looked like Barb ran away, on her own power, and without being coerced. People thought, "Yeah, Barb is too smart for this little podunk town anyway, no wonder she scarpered." Nancy didn't believe it, and she kept looking. But everybody else thought that it was less remarkable for a high school girl, almost an adult, to drive to the train station and leave than it was for a ten year old boy to vanish into thin air then die in a quarry.

And then, when they DID have a chance to look for her? THEY LOOKED FOR BARB FIRST. It wasn't until El found Barb's dead body that she started looking for Will.

Yeah, Barb got a rough deal there. But her friends didn't sell her out or ignore her. Her only mistake was not being a fan of the Clash, which would have let her obsessively sing "Should I Stay Or Should I Go?" to keep her hanging on to life long enough to be rescued.
