In my headcanon, Albert Campion's real last name is Blakeney [Apr. 26th, 2014|07:50 pm]

So, Albert Campion is a fictional gentleman detective/adventurer, created by Margery Allingham, in stories she wrote from 1929 to 1965. He makes no secret that "Albert Campion" is a pseudonym, and that he comes from a privileged background.

So I think it's clear that he's the descendant of Sir Percy Blakeney, also known as The Scarlet Pimpernel.

He probably knows Bertie Woodhouse, too. I'm sure that Lugg and Jeeves have traded tips on valeting. (Magersfontein Lugg is Campion's manservant. He's not a very good servant, but he's an excellent burglar and good with his fists.)

I read somewhere that Allingham originally thought of him as a fantasy version of the Duke of York- later King George VI (whose real first name was Albert.) I know there's a very strong hint in one of the early books that he's not merely aristocratic but royal.

Wikipedia suggests that Allingham dropped that idea pretty soon, and that, if you look at all the stuff in total, the preponderance of the evidence puts him at somewhere around Viscount or so.

I haven't read the books, but happened on the TV series and fell in love.
